Attendance Requirements

California's Compulsory Education Code Section 48200 states that it is the responsibility of the parents to see that their child attend school regularly. This law also states that the parent has the responsibility to send their children to school every day on time.

Students must attend school every day and arrive on time to all classes 100% of the time. Each student is expected to maintain at least a 96% attendance rate (missing fewer than 7 days in one school year-August to June). All absences must be cleared and verified upon returning from absence(s).

Unverified absences may result in your child being classified as truant. A truant is defined by the State of California as any student with 3 unexcused absences or tardiness in excess of 30 minutes or a combination thereof in one school year. The California Education Code section (E.C.)48260 requires school districts to notify parents when their child is classified as truant. LAUSD has automated the Initial Truancy Letters to notify parents/guardians in a timely manner. To avoid your child being classified as a truant, you must submit a note or documentation for all absences, tardiness, and early leaves to the school office.

Returning From an Absence
  • Per District policy, it is required that all absences, tardies, and early leaves be cleared within 10 school days with a satisfactory explanation (in writing, or verbal justification)
  • Absences from school will only be excused for: student illness, student injury,  student medical, dental appointments, and funeral services for immediate family members . Absence for any other reason will not be excused.
  • Students must bring a note with their name, date of birth, date of the absence(s); the reason for their absence(s) and parent/guardian signature.
  • Parent/guardian may contact school directly to speak with office personnel to clear an absence  (323) 276-5402
  • A Parent or Doctor's Note must be presented to the Main Office before the start of the school day (8:30 a.m.) Doctor's note should indicate name of student and date(s) of doctor visit and/or when student is approved to return to school.
Tardiness
  • School main gate opens at 8:00 am. If student arrives after 8:30 a.m., he/she will be considered tardy. If a student is tardy for 30 minutes or more for three days without a valid excuse, your child will be considered truant.
  • Students must arrive on time to every class. Tardy Sweeps will be conducted randomly throughout the day and student's parents will be contacted to address tardiness.

Leaving School Early
  • Parent or guardian must “sign-out” their son/daughter at the Main Office by presenting a photo ID. If parent or guardian is unable to pick up the student another person on the emergency card can pick up the student with a photo ID (no exceptions will be made).
  • When a student needs to leave school early for an appointment such as a doctor, dental, etc., a parent note or doctor’s appointment notice must be brought to the Main office. A parent note must include the student’s name, date of birth, time of the appointment, telephone number and parent/guardian signature. School personnel will contact parent to verify the authenticity of the note presented. Telephone number on the note must match the telephone number listed in MiSiS, the LAUSD student information system.
Update Student Emergency Card
  • Change of Address or Phone Numbers – Must Notify School Immediately
  • Per District policy, parent/guardian must notify the school immediately of any address or telephone number change. If there is an address change, a public utility bill such as a gas, water, electric or rental agreement must be presented to the Main Office.
